Shanahan To Get Redskins Back On Track

Mike Shanahan is introduced as Washington Redskins Head Coach.

Mike Shanahan joins the Washington Redskins on Wednesday as head coach and executive vice president with five year contract, $35 million contract.

Shanahan had back to back Super Bowl wins after the 1997 and ’98 seasons and made the playoffs in 7 of his 14 seasons with the Denver Broncos, but was fired a year ago after Denver missed the playoffs for the third consecutive year.

“It’s been a good year off for me to sit back and really evaluate,” Shanahan said. “I’ve enjoyed watching more games and doing things that I’ve never done before, and at the same time, very anxious to get back.”

The theme of Mike Holmgren’s formal introduction as Browns president was all about change.

Fred Nance, the recently appointed team legal counsel who introduced the Super Bowl-winning coach, welcomed Holmgren “on behalf of all of us who kept the faith and knew that a better day was coming for the Cleveland Browns.”

Holmgren talked of being “invigorated” by his new career challenge and said to “expect some changes.” He talked of setting aside egos and getting everyone on the same page to get on “with the job of winning.”

ORCHARD PARK — Around the NFL, the first day following the end of the regular season has become known as Black Monday because, on average in recent years, about six head coaches lose their jobs.

Black Monday was particularly black in Buffalo because not only was interim head coach Perry Fewell handed his walking papers, so was the entire coaching staff as new general manager Buddy Nix let it be known in a swift and decisive manner that there’s a new man running the show, and the status quo isn’t good enough.

It was announced today, Ron Turner, offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears has been fired.

Bears starting fullback Jason McKie shares his feelings on some of the staffing changes.

“On one hand, I’m really happy that coach Lovie Smith is going to back next year. I think all the players knew Lovie wasn’t going anywhere, but it’s still a relief.”

“Big Unit” Randy Johnson retires after 22 seasons, a 300 game winner.

Randy Johnson, who was virtually unmatched in his ability to intimidate and dominate hitters, announced his retirement from baseball during a Tuesday evening conference call.

Johnson relied on a fastball ranging between 95-100 mph and a hard slider through much of his 22-year career to gather numerous accolades, including five Cy Young Awards and 10 All-Star selections. His statistical dossier bulges with notable accomplishments: 4,875 strikeouts, topped only by Nolan Ryan’s 5,714 on the all-time list; a 303-166 career record, which made him the 24th pitcher in Major League history to exceed the 300-win plateau; and two no-hitters, one of which was a perfect game at Atlanta on May 18, 2004.

Washington Redskins GM Bruce Allen has not yet identified his candidates for head coach after firing Jim Zorn just hours earlier.

The Redskins have been in contact with former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan on Monday, ESPN and the AP reported.

NFL.com states that Shanahan is the preferred choice to replace Jim Zorn.

The airplane of Redskins owner Daniel Snyder was reported to be at an airport in the Denver area and Mike Shanahan lives in the Denver.

Shanahan then flew to Dulles airport in Virginia to meet with Redskins officials about possibly becoming their new head coach.

John Madden Works With NFL Head Trauma Research

On Monday, January 4, 2010, the NFL announced additional important developments in its ongoing work related to player health and safety in the area of concussions.

The NFL has confirmed its partnership with the Boston University Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy to research the long-term effects of head trauma in athletes. The league through the NFL Alumni Association is encouraging current and former NFL players to agree to donate their brains to the Center to assist its research efforts.

The NFL is committed to providing $1 million or more for independent research projects that will be identified by the Center.

Miami Dolphins rookie quarterback Pat White was carted off the field on a backboard during Sundays game against Pittsburgh.

White collided with Steelers’ cornerback Ike Taylor in an unnerving helmet-to-helmet hit heard across Land Shark Stadium. Players from both teams motioned for help as football took a backseat. Silence overtook the stadium while everyone both on and off the field waited for one thing, to see White move.

“It’s bone-chiling almost,” Dolphins offensive guard Nate Garner said. “Seeing someone laying there motionless. It’s very scary.”

Dallas Clinches NFC Division Title

Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys had their way with the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. Their reward: the NFC East title and the challenge of trying to do it again.

Romo threw a pair of early touchdown passes and the defense took over from there, sending Dallas to a 24-0 victory over Philadelphia on Sunday and setting up a rematch at their new palace next weekend.

RAVENS 21, RAIDERS 13: At Oakland, Calif., Willis McGahee ran for a career-high 167 yards and three touchdowns and the Ravens clinched an AFC wild-card berth.

Vikings Destroy Giants 44-7

The Vikings brought their “A” game today, but it looked like the Giants left theirs at home.

There didn’t seem to be any interest or effort from the New York Giants.  There will probably be some major player changes soon to come, at least if they want more from their team there will be.

The Minnesota Vikings on the other hand played strong.  Brett Farve was 25 of 31 for 316 yards and four touchdowns in Minnesota’s 44-7 win.
