Pete Rose: Hall Of Fame Or Not?

Cincinnati Reds Pete Rose c.1978 (10OCT08)
If you’ve kept up with the news at all, you’ve probably seen a lot of coverage about Pete Rose and whether or not he belongs in Cooperstown. My thoughts about this issue will follow.

Rose was exiled from baseball after being caught gambling on games involving a team he managed about 20 years ago. While he violated a code of conduct, this has nothing to do with anything done while he was a professional baseball player.

Another reason I believe that Pete should be let in is that even though he did bet on the game of baseball, it was after he even quit playing. So a lifetime ban was a little to harsh, don’t you think?

Nine Top MLB Prospects

Neftali Feliz

Neftali Feliz: Any player that can regularly pitch 100 mph fastballs has the chance to dominate in the majors. As long as his arm stays strong, he can easily do this.

Gordon Beckham. A true five-tooler in every sense of the world when it comes to baseball. From fielding, to hitting, to speed (which happens to be exceptional), Beckham has one of the brightest futures in major league baseball.

Justin Smoak – Man, this guy is a big bopper. He has power and he has a glove. I wouldn’t be surprised if he won a few home run derbys before it’s all said and done. He will be a huge impact player.

“Big Unit” Randy Johnson retires after 22 seasons, a 300 game winner.

San Francisco Giants Randy Johnson

Randy Johnson, who was virtually unmatched in his ability to intimidate and dominate hitters, announced his retirement from baseball during a Tuesday evening conference call.

Johnson relied on a fastball ranging between 95-100 mph and a hard slider through much of his 22-year career to gather numerous accolades, including five Cy Young Awards and 10 All-Star selections. His statistical dossier bulges with notable accomplishments: 4,875 strikeouts, topped only by Nolan Ryan’s 5,714 on the all-time list; a 303-166 career record, which made him the 24th pitcher in Major League history to exceed the 300-win plateau; and two no-hitters, one of which was a perfect game at Atlanta on May 18, 2004.

For the second time in three months, a Detroit Tiger has found his way into police custody.

Tigers starting catcher Gerald Laird was arrested Wednesday night for his role in a brawl inside the NBA arena in Phoenix, the Associated Press reported. Also arrested were Laird’s younger brother, Brandon Laird, who’s an infield prospect in the Yankees’ system, and an unidentified man. The alleged brawl occurred in a lounge area of the U.S. Airways Center, where the Suns and Celtics were playing. AP reported that police said Laird’s party was contacted by security about loud behavior, and that two men were allowed back into the lounge after a conversation with security. But a melee, according to the AP report, broke out shortly thereafter when the Laird brothers assaulted the security guards.

The Baseball Mystery That Is David Price

Tampa Bay Rays David Price

Way back in March, when most people were doing their fantasy baseball drafts, many people were claiming David Price would be the next big thing. And after a terrific stint in the bullpen late in the regular season and in the playoffs, we had good reason to believe this to be true, not to mention he’s got tremendous stuff and had dominated the minors earlier in the year.

Many GMs scurried to make sure that Price was on their roster, and clung tight to him despite the fact that the Rays opted to send Price to the minors for April and most of May. Once Price was called up, the excitement about this pitcher returned, and everyone anxiously waited to see how effective he’d be.
