Cincinnati Reds Pete Rose c.1978 (10OCT08)
If you’ve kept up with the news at all, you’ve probably seen a lot of coverage about Pete Rose and whether or not he belongs in Cooperstown. My thoughts about this issue will follow.

Rose was exiled from baseball after being caught gambling on games involving a team he managed about 20 years ago. While he violated a code of conduct, this has nothing to do with anything done while he was a professional baseball player.

Another reason I believe that Pete should be let in is that even though he did bet on the game of baseball, it was after he even quit playing. So a lifetime ban was a little to harsh, don’t you think?

Also, I will go back to how Pete never enhanced his performance. He never took steroids. Now, A-Rod, Barry Bonds, and other people like them, will be let into the hall of fame, even though they have messed with their performance. Not all of their home runs were off of pure power, or their hits off of talent. All of Pete’s hits were from pure talent. The fact that he is the hit king should in my view, get him in.

While the ban shouldn’t guarantee him a spot, it should at least guarantee him a chance for those who vote to choose he belongs. From everything I’ve read and heard, players seem to agree that Rose belongs. It seems like Selig has an open mind, but no one ever knows what’s really going on inside that head so it’s hard to say what will happen.

That is my take on the whole situation. Agree with me or not, this is how I feel. The man, has waited long enough, and even admitted to betting on the game, just let Pete in. He deserves it.

Jonathan Blanchard is an NBA hopeful, but has plenty to do before he can think about getting there. He is always happy to discuss the NBA at his preferred NBA Basketball forum and is always hungry for sports trivia wherever there are questions.
