Baltimore Ravens QB Troy Smith

Baltimore Ravens starting quarterback Troy Smith came down with a rare case of tonsillitis two years ago allowing rookie Joe Flacco to step in.  Flacco’s sharp arm and intuitive skills proved Joe  an asset to the Ravens and he has been their starter ever since.

Troy Smith played in the the fourth preseason game and despite some errors, he did make the best of the situation.  A press release explains that Baltimore feels it is best to keep just two quarterbacks on the team, Joe Flacco and backup Marc Bulger.

“The competition to make our team was very heated, and we decided to keep a position player rather than a third quarterback,” Newsome said. “We have a number of young guys who made our team who have tremendous upside, plus they can help us win this year. We’ve gone with two quarterbacks before.”

Keeping just 2 quarterbacks is risky, but in a written statement Newsome said the decision boiled down to adding depth at another position.

In 2006 the Ravens had just two quarterbacks on the team, the late Steve McNair who was backed up by Kyle Boller.

Along with Smith, several other cuts have brought the team down to the 53-man roster limit.

Some of the cuts are as follows:

  • Place kicker Shayne Graham
  • Cornerback Travis Fisher
  • Wide receiver Eron Riley
  • Tight end Davon Drew
  • Offensive tackle Devin Tyler
  • Linebacker Albert McClellan
  • Cornerback Prince Miller
  • Defensive back Brad Jones

The Ravens are known for making the best decisions for their team.  Time will tell if they have continued in true Baltimore form.
