Tennessee Titans Chris Johnson

Chris Johnson Tennessee Titans running back was named National Football League’s 2009 Offensive Player of the Year. He is the sixth player to rush for 2,000 yards in a season.

Johnson received 38 1/2 votes from a nationwide panel of 50 sports writers and broadcasters who cover the NFL. Saints quarterback Drew Brees came in second with 9 votes.

Johnson, 24, rushed for a franchise-record 2,006 yards to join Eric Dickerson, Jamal Lewis, Barry Sanders, Terrell Davis and O.J. Simpson as the only NFL running backs to reach the 2,000-yard mark in a single season.

“It feels like a big dream. It is all hitting me now — what I have done this whole season. I can sit back now and say ‘wow, I really had a dream season.’ All of the hard work is really paying off,” ,” Johnson said.

He was surprised to win, especially after he didn’t get a single vote for MVP.

“I didn’t even get one vote for the MVP out of 50 people, so why would they vote for me for offensive player of the year?,” Johnson said. “And all five guys that got votes for MVP were offensive players.

“I am very honored to get the award. To be honest, I really didn’t think I would get it. It makes it even better, because I didn’t think it was going to happen.”

Johnson set a league record with 2,509 yards gained from scrimmage this season. He is the only player ever to rush for more than 2,000 yards, and have over 500 yards receiving. Johnson also finished with 14 touchdowns, which is second only to Adrian Peterson. He also had three touchdown runs of more than 85 yards for the Titans this season.
